For anyone preparing for a self-led or guided ascent of Mt Aspiring via the NW Ridge from late December to April or other similar alpine objectives. This classic ascent is long, with sustained moderate scrambling and some short steep & tricky sections. This training weekend develops technical and alpine movement skills in the stunning Remarkables mountains near Queenstown. This is complemented by rock climbing & training on local Wanaka crags if the weather is not conducive to heading up into the mountains. Two days focused on technical training will complement the fitness and endurance training you are able to do on a regular basis from home.
For summer mountaineering and winter ski or snowboard touring on the high glaciers. Revise your knots and tie-in methods and choose the most appropriate technique in a variety of scenarios. Practice crevasse and self-rescue scenarios and learn problem-solving tips and tricks. Discuss mountain trip planning and preparation.
Transition from single to multi-pitch rock or practice trad climbing skills. Learn techniques for problem-avoidance and problem-solving on single and multi-pitch rock climbs, including emergency rescue of injured parties.
Techniques for researching and planning suitable objectives. Deciding route-finding and equipment considerations. Navigational tools and strategies including map and compass work and use of GPS.
