Get a head start on the winter season with valuable avalanche education.

This course can be stand alone or you can use it to work towards our 1.5 Avalanche Awareness Course. The lockdown lesson will cover;

  • Trip Planning and Preparation
  • Defining the avalanche phenomenon
  • Understanding the NZ Avalanche Advisory
  • Weather terrain snowpack and how these related to avalanche conditions
  • Travel: Evidence based decision-making
  • How to perform companion rescue

Once you've completed our Module 1 - Avalanche Awareness, and we are back out there operating in the field, you'll have the option to come back along and combine this with a evening refresher and field day to get the full experience.

Avalanche Awareness for Skiers, Snowboarders, Hikers & Climbers

The plan is:

LOCKDOWN LESSON: We will take up to 6 people on each lesson, connecting via Zoom (or an alternative video conferencing platform). You can expect this to last 2.5-3 hours. The emphasis is on giving you the tools to make decisions based on science rather than emotion.

REFRESHER & FIELD DAY - Dates TBC: We'll meet in our office in Wanaka at 6pm to do a refresher and get ready for the field day. This next day we'll head up to one of the local ski areas (depending on weather and conditions) where your instructor will do a gear check and introduce you to avalanche safety equipment. The morning will be used learning about safe travel and relating evidenced based decision making clues to the environment. The afternoon will be spent learning small party rescue techniques including using transceivers and shovelling.
