Quite a few years ago we founded hut-accessed touring in this area, giving access to the Northern Pisa Range and the Lowburn face. The huts redefine the Southern Lakes hut-based skiing options. At over 1700m they are significantly higher than the base of any of the commercial ski areas. Enveloped by a high cirque, the area offers consistent snow and a variety of terrain.
Your experienced and qualified guide will show you around, hunting out the best runs of the day and looking after your safety.
We can offer 2, 3 or 4 day options at this unique location. Prices are based on the 4 day trip.
Meet with your guide at the Aspiring Guides office on the evening (5:30pm) prior to departure. Your guide will check all your clothing and equipment required for the trip. Any last minute equipment is issued and gives us time to hit the shops for anything you are missing. The weather forecast will be discussed and a plan made for the the following morning.
Aspiring Guides pioneered ski touring in the area and we placed Robrosa Hut to take advantage of the high southern exposures of the Cliffburn Valley. Our backpacks are light because sleeping bags, cooking gear and other necessities will already be in the hut. After dropping our gear we get straight into the local runs. Some people are more comfortable with the long easy ridges while others prefer the steep chutes that blanket the area.
In our experience people want one thing, powder snow. Whether we stay local or explore the numerous bowls on the Lowburn Face just depends on how hard you want to hit it. You will be blown away at the wide variety of ski runs available.
The ski tour out from Robrosa Hut to the Snow Farm Nordic Area is about 12km with 500m gain and 750m descent. Skiing out via the Princeburn Valley offers over 6km continuous downhill and with only a light pack to carry it is a ski tour to savor. There is ample opportunity to stop and enjoy some of the mellow bowl runs along the way. We usually arrive back at the vehicle at 4pm followed by a 5pm thirst quenching debrief at Aspiring Guides Wanaka office.
NB : Please note that this itinerary is a sample only and the actual itinerary may vary at the discretion of your guide. Weather, conditions and personal ability and needs may make changes necessary or advantageous to the participants.
No need to carry anything more than a shovel, transceiver and smile. Further afield are the Lowburn Faces where you can tour a different backcountry bowl with every run.
Intermediate skiers will appreciate the labyrinth of easy angles slopes and valleys that can be followed. For people new to touring this is a great place to learn the ins and outs of how to use touring skis. There are inspiring views of Mt Aspiring and the chain of the Southern Alps.
With helicopter access right from Wanaka Airport you get the most skiing possible packed into your ski touring holiday. From our office in Wanaka you are at the top of your first run within the hour and there is no need to carry a heavy pack or eat dehydrated food, you can bring all the goodies!
If the weather does not allow you to spend the whole trip at Robrosa then your guide will show you round some of the other great backcountry options in the area accessed from local ski fields.
Participants need to be able to travel up steep hills and be strong enough to handle variable conditions.
